Borage Oil, extracted from the seed of the blue, star shaped borage flower, has drawn the attention of researchers due to its active component, Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA). Many of the benefits of GLA are believed to stem from the conversion in the human body of GLA to prostaglandins. Prostaglandins, are known to orchestrate many biochemical activities in the body, including those related to the regulation of hormones.

GLA is claimed to have regulating effects in medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and multiple sclerosis. Studies also indicate the potential benefits of GLA for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, skin conditions, allergies, hyperactivity in children, and even weight loss. Other studies indicate there are additional benefits derived from GLA such as relief from menstrual pain, and the increased strength of hair and nails.

Of the three most popular sources of GLA, Borage Oil, Evening Primrose oil and Blackcurrent seed oil, Borage Oil has the highest GLA content.
